Apple is acquiring older movies and shows for its Apple TV+ streaming service to build a back catalog of content that can better stack up against the huge libraries available on Netflix, Hulu and Disney+, reports Bloomberg, which says the service now has 10 million folks signed up.
The article says the tech giant’s video-programming execs have taken pitches from Hollywood studios about licensing older content for TV+ and have bought some shows and movies. Still, the company plans on keeping the streaming service focused on original content.
Apple TV+ costs US$4.99 per month. However, it’s free for a year for anyone who buys an Apple device, and students who have a student subscription to Apple Music for $4.99 per month can also get access to Apple TV+ at no additional charge.
