Apple releases iOS 13.5, iPad OS 13.5, tvOS 13.4.5

Apple has released iOS 13.5, iPad OS 13.5, and tvOS 13.4.5. According to the release notes, the first two speed up access to the passcode field on devices with Face ID when you’re wearing a face mask and introduces the Exposure Notification API to support COVID-19 contact tracing apps from public health authorities.

This update also introduces an option to control automatic prominence of video tiles on Group FaceTime calls and includes bug fixes and other improvements. The iOS and ‌‌‌iPadOS‌‌‌ updates are available on all eligible devices over-the-air in the Settings app. Go to Settings > General > Software Update.

tvOS 13.4.5 is for fourth and fifth generations of the Apple TV set-top box. As best as I can tell, it features stability and performance tweaks.

It can be downloaded over the air through the Settings app on the ‌Apple TV‌ by going to System > Software Update. ‌Apple TV‌ owners who have automatic software updates enabled will be upgraded to tvOS 13.4.5 automatically.

Apple has also released new firmware (version 13.4.5) with stability improvements for the HomePod. It should install automatically on the ‌smart speaker, but if not:

  • Open up the Home app.

  • Tap on the home icon in the upper left corner of the display.

  • If you have only one Home scene set up, this will take you directly to settings, so skip directly to Step 5. If you have multiple home scenes, tap “Home Settings” on the sheet that pops up and pick the one you need

  • Scroll down to “Software Update.”
