According to Canalys, the demand for personal computers soared in the first quarter of 2020, drive by remote working and learning requirements from strict lockdown procedures around the world. The bad news: the pandemic also caused severe delays in production and logistical issues, leading to global personal computer shipments falling 8% year-on-year.
Canalys says Apple was hit the hardest, as its Mac shipments fell by over 20% to 3.2 million units in the first quarter. That compares to 4.1 million units shipping in the first quarter of 2019. The Mac’s global marketshare has tipped from 7% to 6% year-over-year, according to Canalys. Note that the research group doesn’t count iPads as a personal computer; if it did, Apple’s listed share of the personal computer market would go up substantially.
During the quarter, vendors shipped 53.7 million desktops, laptops, and workstations. Canalys says the top vendor rankings except for Apple remained relatively stable with Lenovo still leading the personal computer market with 12.8 million units shipped. HP shipped 11.7 million units, followed by Dell with 10.5 million units.
