Apple is negotiating to lease office space at 11 Penn Plaza in New York City, according to the New York Post.
The 1.15-million-square-foot building owned by Vornado has 638,921 square feet available from the fourth through 14th floors as a sublease from Macy’s, with some square footage ready to be occupied. The Post, quoting unnamed sources, claims Apple is negotiating for roughly 200,000 square feet of the space in the middle of the building, which holds down the entire eastern block front along Seventh Avenue between West 31st and 32nd streets, cater-corner to Madison Square Garden.
Apple has a long history in the Big Apple. The tech giant has done a standout job of taking old, historic buildings and converting them into stunning new stores. The New York Landmarks Conservancy announced in 2016 that Apple would receive its 2016 Chairman’s Award recognizing the company’s preservation and restoration of historic structures in New York City.
In 2017 the New York Police Department is scrapped 36,000 smartphones it gave police officers over the previous two years and replaced them with iPhones. That same year New York City’s transit system replaced the MetroCard with the ability for passengers to pay with mobile payment systems such as Apple Pay. And Apple has six retail stores in NYC.
