Kanex’s $99.95 6-in-1 Multiport USB-C Docking Station promises to let you “easily turn your iPad Pro into a portable workstation.” I still find my Apple tablet too limited to replace my Mac laptop as my portable working device (though “true” mouse support would help), but this device does make it more laptop-like.
The $99.95 Kanex 6-in-1 Multiport USB-C Docking Station eliminates the need to carry around multiple adapters for your iPad Pro. It connects using an integrated USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C cable that not only transfers data between the hub and iPad Pro at speeds up to 5 Gb/s, but also supports the DisplayPort 1.2 standard.
Other ports include a USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C port that supports device charging up to 60W, a USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A port, a 3.5mm jack, and an HDMI port that supports video up to 2K at 60 Hz with HDCP content protection.
Thanks to dedicated UHS-I SDXC and microSDXC card slots, you can download content from SD-compatible devices to your iPad Pro. And with plug ’n play, USB-C power delivery, no external power cord is needed.
Kanex has also designed their Multiport USB Type-C Docking Station to work with the Apple Smart Keyboard Folio. An included bumper is designed to help create a more cohesive fit with or without the Folio, though it won’t fit Apple tablets that have a glass screen protector installed.
I had to fiddle a bit with the bumper to get the fit I needed. Once installed, the Multiport USB Type-C Docking Station feels like it’s a built-in part of the iPad Pro. However, it also adds extra bulk at 3.25 inches by 1.4 in. by 0.75 inches (not counting the cable) and 1.7 ounces. You’ll also have to remove it to insert your iPad Pro into most carrying cases.
If you’re using your Apple tablet as a laptop replacement/alternative — or plan on trying this scenario — the Kanex Multiport USB Type-C Docking Station will make it easier. However, if you’re simply using your iPad for email/webs surfing/watching movies, this is an accessory you can probably skip.
