Rumor: we may see ‘Apple Tag’ tracking devices announced next week

In a note to clients, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says Apple will introduce its own tracking device, possibly dubbed “Apple Tag,” that will compete with products such as Tile at next week’s “By Innovation Only” event.

The Tile (pictured) is a tiny Bluetooth tracker and app combo. After you have purchased your Tile, download the app to iOS device, and y pair your Tile to your device. Once your device is paired use your app to find your item; just listen for the ring.

Based on Kuo’s prediction, you could attach Apple’s circular alternative to iPhones, iPads, Apple TV remotes, keys, wallets, etc, to help track down missing items. Supposedly, the Tags will integrate with the new Find My app that will debut in Apple’s operating system updates.

Kuo predicts that all three 2019 iPhone models will be equipped with Ultra Wide Band (UWB) with the tech integrating into existing apps. The analyst thinks that this could give Apple Maps a boost when it comes to indoor navigation.

UWB is a communication method used in wireless networking that uses low power consumption to achieve high bandwidth connections. It’s designed to transmit a lot of data over a short distance without using too much power.

Kuo also looked into his crystal ball for next year. He forecasts 2020 iPhones with 5G, a new external design, and even better camera features.

The “By Innovation Only” event will be held Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 10 a.m. (Pacific). In addition to new iPhones and tracking devices, look for new Apple Watches and perhaps new iPad Pros to be announced.
