According to 9to5Mac, Apple is planning a feature for the upcoming macOS 10.15 dubbed “Sidecar,” which will offer the functionality of the Luna Display (see my review) and Duet Display. In other words, it will allow an iPad to act as a secondary display (and more) when paired with your Mac.
9to5Mac, quoting unnamed “people familiar with the development of macOS 10.15,” says the new system — which will almost certainly be previewed at June’s Apple Worldwide Developer Conference — will have a feature that allows users to send any window of any app to an external display.
What’s more, the article says that users with an iPad that supports the Apple Pencil will also be able to draw with the Pencil on the tablet when it’s being used as an external display for the Mac, effectively turning the iPad into a Wacom-like tablet.
Positioning the tablet as a sort of “Touch Bar” for desktop Macs, as well as a drawing tablet could help sales of both Macs and iPads in a double “halo effect.”
Such a move would mean added functionality for Apple’s tablet It would also add some serious touch screen features to the Mac without the desktops or laptops having built-in touch screens, something Apple has been adamantly opposed to (so far).
