Debro Darden joins Apple Music as editorial head of hip-hop and R&B

Billboard reports that Hot 97 (WQHT) New York morning personality and Apple Music Beats 1 anchor host Ebro Darden has been appointed Apple Music’s global editorial head of hip-hop and R&B. In this newly designated role, he’ll manage a team of hip-hop and R&B editors in developing editorial strategies for artists, albums and song releases in the U.S. and globally, the article adds.

Darden is an American media executive and radio presenter who, until 2014, was Vice President of Programming for Emmis Communications’ New York contemporary urban station WQHT Hot 97, and is a co-host on the Hot 97 Morning Show alongside Peter Rosenberg, and Laura Stylez. In addition to his current on-air role at Hot 97, Darden has been one of three anchor DJs on Beats 1, an Internet radio service from Apple Music.

Prior to Darden’s appointment, Carl Chery served as Apple Music’s head of artist curation with a specific focus on hip-hop and R&B before segueing to Spotify last April. At Apple’s music streaming service, he developed popular playlists (A-List: Hip-Hop and A-List: R&B) and was also responsible for securing two Apple exclusive releases from Chance The Rapper, including the Grammy Award-winning album, “Coloring Book.” Chery joined Apple in 2014 as part of the company’s Beats By Dre/Beats Music acquisition.
