Urban Armor Gear (UAG) has launched its new Metropolis Series Case for the new iPad Pro 10.5 and 12.9-inch models at a price of $59.95 and $89.95, respectively. I tested the latter and found it to be very rugged — but with one major “gotcha” for folks like me.
The UAG Metropolis is both tough and versatile with its an impact-resistant soft core and tactile non-slip exterior grip. The base design starts with a thick polycarbonate case that the Apple tablet slips into, with honeycomb indentations on the back side of the case to provide cushioning for the tablet in case you drop it. The corners are given extra padding as well.
A thin flap covers the iPad Pro display, with soft microfiber actually touching the screen. That flap also acts as a stand for the iPad Pro when folded over.
How good is the protection of the UAG Metropolis case? It meets the MIL STD 810G-516.6 specification, which requires that the tested item can physically and functionally withstand the frequent, repetitive shocks encountered in transportation, service, and handling. Note that the standard doesn’t say anything about how high a drop the case protects against, and that there’s no protection from dust or water. Also, the Metropolis doesn’t come with a screen protector.
I have to fess up: as I forked out the cash for my iPad Pro, I’m not going to drop it with the UAG case installed to test its drop-proof abilities. That confession aside the Metropolis feels like it could handle a drop without my iPad Pro getting damaged.
The case also includes onboard storage for the Apple Pencil, a feature I really like. However, the Metropolis can’t be used with the Smart Keyboard Folio, which I often use with my iPad Pro. If you do the same, the UAG case probably isn’t for you. On the other hand, if you don’t use the Folio, the Metropolis is an attractive, rugged case.
