Apple will begin assembling its top-end iPhones in India through the local unit of its manufacturing partner Foxconn as early as 2019, the first time the Taiwanese company will have made the product in the country, reports Reuters, quoting an unnamed “source familiar with the matter. The article doesn’t specify which “top-end” models that entails, however.
The work will purportedly take place at Foxconn’s plant in Sriperumbudur town in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. The contractor will invest 25 billion Indian rupees ($356 million) to expand the plant, and the investment may create as many as 25,000 jobs, per Reuters.
Two years ago, Foxconn signed a deed for a 1,200-acre property in Maharashtra, India, where it planned to build a $10 billion manufacturing plant just for Apple products.
