Apple’s $999 Thunderbolt Display was discontinued in 2016, so it’s time for new Apple monitors. The Oct. 30 “There’s more in the making” event would be the perfect time to unveil such displays, especially if the tech giant unveils updated iMacs, MacBooks, and Mac minis, as expected.
Since ditching its own display line, Apple has been recommending LG’s UltraFine 4K and 5K monitors. They’re fine (pun intended), but simply not as elegant as Apple’s own late, lamented models.
New Apple monitors may not ship until the company releases its new modular Mac Pro, which isn’t slated to happen until sometime in 2019. Sooner would be better when it comes to the needs/wants of Mac users.
Whenever a new Apple display does arrive — and Apple says one is in the works — let’s hope that such a display will be available in both 4K and 5K versions — and with all the ports of an iMac, not just the USB-C ports on the current LG monitors. Beefed-up built-in speakers, such as those on the iMac Pro, would be welcome, as well.
