Whether Apple’s long-rumored AirPower will ever see the light of day seems questionable. However, the tech giant has been granted a patent (number 10,097,913) for an “earbud case with charging system” that hints at an AirPod case that would work with the wireless charger.
The invention is for a case that includes a housing having cavities to receive the pair of earbuds. It would sport charging circuitry configured to initiate charging of the pair of earbuds when an earbud detector detects that the earbuds are inserted within the cavities.
Apple says there are advantages to such a case since portable listening devices with single use batteries have to be replaced and rechargeable batteries must be constantly recharged. The company’s proposed case would make it easy to charge AirPods and make it easier to keep track of the small earbuds.
Of course, Apple files for — and is granted — lots of patents by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office. Many are for inventions that never see the light of day. However, you never can tell which ones will materialize in a real product.
