A newly granted Apple patent (number 20180164882) offers the possibility of upcoming Macs with “adjustable reflective displays” that could offer features such as detecting head movement and gestures.
According to the patent, input-output circuitry in the display may be used to gather input from a viewer. The circuitry may include a gaze tracking system that gathers point-of-gaze information, vergence (the turning motion of the eyeballs toward or away from each other) information, and head position information.
The monitor could also sport a biometric sensor in a button or touch sensor for capturing hand gestures. The control circuitry may place each area in a reflective mirror more or in a content-displaying mode and may move the areas in response to the information detected.
Of course, Apple files for — and is granted — lots of patents by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office. Many are for inventions that never see the light of day. However, you never can tell which ones will materialize in a real product.
