It’s been a busy, busy WWDC week! After the keynote, hands-on testing of some of the new operating systems, and so on, we decided to end the week on a light note:
- Happy 10th Birthday, iPhone 3G! Apple’s second iPhone brought 3G “speeds”, third-party apps, and the App Store to the mobile device.
- Apple Music is getting a new feature today — Coming Soon
- Today we look at a few of the more notable changes to watchOS 5, like how you access Control Center and Notification Center

Guess what happened 10 years ago today? The iPhone 3G was introduced. It was the first model to feature 3G data speeds — something that would seem incredibly slow at this point in time — and it introduced third-party apps and the App Store. At this time, iOS wasn’t called iOS — the operating system was known as iPhone OS 2.0. For the first time you could save images from the web, the phone was internationalized into a handful of foreign languages, and the first parental controls were added. Apple also introduced a not-very-successful mobile services suite at the same keynote called MobileMe. That’s something Apple would just as soon forget.
Apple Music is going to add a new feature today with a section called Coming Soon. Launch dates for upcoming albums will be listed, and for some artists you’ll be able to pre-order the album. Artist pages are also getting a redesign; at the present time this is apparently showing up only on the Mac, with artist photos showing up in a circular icon and a Featured Release section showing those upcoming release dates.
We’ve been talking about some of the new features in the newly released developer betas of Apple’s operating systems; one of those features for watchOS 5 is a very nice change that’s been needed for years. Now Control Center and Notification Center can be accessed from any Apple Watch screen and from inside apps. In the past, you could only see those important screens from your Watch face. Some other new features for Apple Watch? You can now rearrange the Control Center buttons and can join nearby Wi-Fi networks directly from the Apple Watch.
