Apple reportedly wants to combine augmented reality sharing with strict privacy

At next week’s Worldwide Developer Conference, Apple will debut tools allowing two iPhones to share augmented reality while limiting personal data sent to servers, reports Reuters, quoting two “unnamed people familiar with the matter.”

The article says Apple designed its two-player system to work phone-to-phone in part because of privacy concerns. It differs from Google’s, which requires scans of a player’s environment to be sent to, and stored in, the cloud.

Earlier this week, Bloomberg sources had said that ARKit 2.0 will debut at WWDC and include the ability to share a virtual environment. It allows developers to tap into the latest computer vision technologies to build detailed virtual content on top of real-world scenes for interactive gaming, immersive shopping experiences, industrial design and more.
