Apple is expected to put an an MLCD+ display in an upcoming 6.1-inch iPhone, according to Business Korea. It’s the same sort of screen LG used in its G7 ThinQ smartphone.
An MLCD+ display realizes a bright screen with less power consumption than the IPS LCD display. However, it’s based on existing LCD technology. In addition to the red, green, and blue pixel colors in traditional LCD, MLCD+ includes a fourth white pixel, included basically just to boost peak brightness.
It’s a sub-pixel panel technology that utilizes four sub-pixels (RGBW) instead of the typical three (RGB). Hence, one pixel on the MLCD+ panel is composed of the standard sub-pixel unit plus a white pixel.
It’s expected that 2018 iPhones will ship in 5.8- and 6.5-inch sizes in OLED, with a lower-priced ($700-$800) 6.1-inch device coming, as well.
