It’s the legal battle that keeps on keepin’ on. Attorneys for Apple and Samsung traded juror challenges on Monday at the start of a high-profile California federal trial to determine how much Samsung owes for infringing five of Apple’s design and utility patents, winnowing 74 candidates down to a final panel of eight.
It’s the third time the two tech giants will square off in court. Apple was originally awarded $1.05 billion in 2012 after a jury found Samsung had infringed several of patents related to the iPhone. However, that was reduced to about $400 million a retrial. And a second retrial became necessary after a Supreme Court ruling on how the penalties were calculated.
This is all part of the ongoing, global legal battle. Apple and Samsung have filed more than 30 lawsuits against each other across four continents. For example, Apple alleges that Samsung copied the slide-to-unlock technology of its iPhone and iPad devices.
