Apple’s “spaceship campus” in Cupertino, California just opened in April, but a new campus of the tech giant could be located in North Carolina’s Research Triangle Park, a 22 million square foot research park, according to the Triangle Business Journal.
The Research Triangle, commonly referred to as simply The Triangle, is a region in the Piedmont of North Carolina, anchored by North Carolina State University, Duke University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the cities of Raleigh and Durham and the town of Chapel Hill.
North Carolina appeared on speculative short lists from Bloomberg and VentureBeat. The Research Triangle Park location, in particular, could combine decent infrastructure, qualified workers, and government backing.
According to Seeking Alpha, the campus could bring thousands of jobs to the area but Apple will want incentives. Those incentives could include up to 25 years of grants if the company creates 5,000 jobs and invests more than $4 billion in the state.
The campus is part of an Apple pledge to pump $350 billion into the U.S. economy during the next five years. Along the same lines, The Washington Post says Apple has explored opening a campus for 20,000 employees in Northern Virginia, an area Amazon is also considering for its new campus.
