The U.S. Transportation Department has announced the winners of its drone pilot project, which aims to produce data and assist the FAA in establishing safety regulations for UAVs. Apple is among them.
The tech giant says it plans to use the testing program to improve Apple Maps by capturing aerial images.
“Apple is committed to protecting people’s privacy, including processing this data to blur faces and license plates prior to publication,” the company told CNBC.
Also included in the winner’s list are Alphabet, Airbus, Dominion Energy, FedEx, Intel, Microsoft, Qualcomm, and Uber. Missing from the list were Amazon and China’s DJI, but the DoT could announce more projects in the coming months.
