Apple hires tech guru/award-winning photographer

Apple has hired Jon McCormack — who has worked at HP, Google, HP, and Amazon — as a vice president working on software, reports Bloomberg.

McCormack previously was the global head of Software and vice president, Personal Systems Division, at HP. Before that, he was an executive in Google’s Advanced Technology and Products group. He spent several years at Amazon.com Inc. as chief technology officer of the devices group and a vice president of software for Kindle gadgets.

GeekWire says his departure is particularly noteworthy because it’s the second time he has left Amazon in the past year. The first time, he left his job as vice president of Kindle Software in December for a job at Yahoo. For two months, he was Yahoo’s vice president of engineering, before he returned to Amazon in March, where he was promoted to CTO of Amazon Devices. His latest departure comes just six months after rejoining Amazon.

McCormack is also the co-founder of The Kilgoris Project, educates and feeds the children of a Massai village in southwest Kenya. It partners with the community to operate three pre-schools and a primary school, provide daily food and clean water, and foster economic development.

He’s also an award-winning photographer. His work has been published by international organizations including TIME, The New York Times, The International Herald Tribune, Wall Street Journal, UNESCO, The Nature Conservancy, Africa Geographic, The Guardian, CNN and The Telegraph.

His images have been exhibited at the Royal Geographic Society in London and the Yosemite Museum in California. In addition to photography Jon is also an active environmentalist and serves on the Science Advisory Board for Conservation International.
