Apple Daily Report for April 11, 2018

The AWT News Update is on a one-day hiatus while my compadre, Steve, takes a break. In its place, I’ll offer a text-only (no podcast) summary of breaking stories with a tip o’ my hat to my former website, Apple Daily Report.

Following the news that the latest iOS update can break phones with non-official replacement screens, repairers are encountering a different, more subtle problem. And they believe Apple is “gunning” for them.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was reportedly ready to criticize Apple in his testimony in Congress over the Cambridge Analytica data scandal. Apple CEO Tim Cook has criticized Facebook for its data practices.

A new iPhone app could help patients with Parkinson’s disease overcome a symptom known as “freezing,” in which the legs temporarily refuse to follow the brain’s command to lift and move forward.

Apple’s success has generated a lot of moolah, but not many billionaires. Chairman Art Levinson is the only insider to make the cut, and Apple stock accounts for just 20% of his $1 billion fortune, according to regulatory filings.

A message included in Apple’s first watchOS 4.3.1 beta warns users that older apps will no longer be supported in “future versions” of the operating system, suggesting support for software built with the watchOS 1.0 SDK could be deprecated with watchOS 5.
