In a note to clients — as noted by the Chinese site Feng — the anticipated 6.1-inch LCD iPhone due later this year may not feature 3D Touch due to pricing issues. Instead, it will sport “Cover Glass Sensor” (CGS) technology and relocated the smartphone’s touch module from the display panel to the surface glass.
Kuo thinks 3D Touch is predicted to remain on this year’s two OLED iPhones (in 5.8-inch and 6.5-inch models). However, he says that CGS may be used on all iPhones starting in 2019.
Odds that Kuo is correct, per the Sellers Research Group (that’s me): 60%. He’s usually right, but 3D Touch is highly integrated into iOS, so it would be … interesting … if Apple removed it. Then again, the tech giant likes to remove things no one thinks it will (I’m looking at you, headphone jack).
