The Mac has 7.3% (or maybe 7.6%) of the global personal computer market

Apple remained in the fourth position for global market share among personal computer makers  and grew its shipments 7.3% in the fourth quarter of 2017, according to IDC The tech giant shipped about 5.8 million Macs during the quarter, per the research group.

Or, according to the Gartner research group, Apple has 7.6% of the global PC market on fourth quarter shipments of about 5.5 million Macs. 

That’s better than the industry average. IDC says worldwide shipments of traditional PCs (desktop, notebook, and workstation) totaled 70.6 million units in the fourth quarter of 2017. 

The results outperformed IDC’s forecast of a 1.7% decline in shipments during the quarter. On the other hand, Gartner says orldwide PC shipments totaled 71.6 million units in the fourth quarter of 2017, a 2% decline from the fourth quarter of 2016

Ahead of Apple in the global PC market according to IDC are: HP (23.5% market share), Lenovo (22.2% market share), and Dell (15.7% market share). In the number five spot is ASUS (6.4% market share). On the other hand, ahead of Apple in the global PC market according to Gartner are: HP (22.5% market share), Lenovo (22% market share), and Dell (15.2% market share). In the number five spot is ASUS (6.6% market share).

Macs have gained global market share for 36 out of the last 37 quarters. Also note that neither IDC or Gartner include tablets in their estimates.
