Rumor: MacBook Air to be replaced by 13-inch MacBook

Touch panel maker General Interface Solution (GIS) is expected to land more LCM (LCD module) orders from Apple, which reportedly plans to release an entry-level 13-inch MacBook in the second half of 2018, according to DigiTimes, quoting unnamed “industry sources.”

With new orders for MacBooks and other models, GIS is expected to ramp up its LCM shipments to 600,000 units a month by the end of 2018 compared to 300,000 units currently, the article says. If a 13-inch MacBook is coming, it’s likely that the MacBook Air line is approaching the end of its run.

Chances this rumor is true, according to the Sellers Research Firm (that’s me): 100%. Trimming the Mac laptop line to the MacBook Pro and MacBook simplifies the line-up. Having the entry level laptops available in 12-inch and 13-inch sizes should satisfy the needs of most “non-pro” users.
