As of Jan. 13, the UK will ban shops and stores from charging a fee for credit card and debit card transactions, according to The Bristol Post. This will eliminate additional fees for credit and debit transactions, including those with Apple Pay.
The law applies to both in-store and online payments and includes American Express and other payment methods such as PayPal. All purchases made in the UK from UK businesses will be protected by the law, and it will also apply to any surcharging by local councils and government agencies agencies, according to The Post. The law also follows an EU directive, meaning companies across the EU will also be banned from applying this surcharge.
Apple Pay is currently available in 20 countries: Australia, Canada, China, France, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Russia, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland, the UK, the U.S., Denmark, Finland, Sweden and the United Arab Emirates.
