Updated: Twelve South serves up two great iPhone X cases (and one ‘merely’ good one)

Twelve South is known for creating great products to enhance the Apple experience and that’s not changed with its new cases for the iPhone X.

The $59.95 BookBook for iPhone X is a wallet case, hands-free stand and removable shell all wrapped up in a vintage leather book. It has pockets to hold your ID, cards and cash.

The BookBook can fold into a display stand for hands-free usage, and a removable shell protects the next get smartphone in or out of the case.

BookBook for the iPhone X sports an upgraded card slot and wallet design to prevent stretching and pilling and adds a dark interior finish to better resist dirt and dust.

The inside of the BookBook is covered in a soft felt to ensure the smartphone has a cozy ride wherever you take it. And taking it anywhere is easy to do due to the case’s lightweight, slim design. There is a a slight bulk to it, but all the features are well worth the tradeoff.

The $69.95 Journal for iPhone X is another book-themed case. The handsome, luxurious case is made of full-grain leather designed to get better looking as it ages. Even the incorporated composite shell that holds the smartphone has a crafted leather inlay.

The Journal — available in black and “cognac” (I prefer the latter) — has slots for cards, cash and a window for your ID. It can serve as your wallet IF your current wallet isn’t filled with credit cards, reward cards, bills, etc. And a built-in viewing stand is conveniient for hands-free FaceTime calls or watching YouTube videos.

The $49.95 Relaxed Leather for iPhone X is a more traditional case, though its’s still made of burnished leather. An interior, quilted interior microfiber lines a five-sided recessed shell to protect the iPhone X.

Two pockets on the back of the case let you store an ID and debit or credit card. I don’t like them on the outside; I prefer the inside, which means as gorgeous as it is, the Relaxed Leather is my least favorite of Twelve South’s iPhone X cases.

Apple World Today Rating (out of 5 stars): ★★★★

Previously, I said that one thing to keep in mind about all three of these cases: despite their advantages, you’ll have to remove your iPhone X from the cases for wireless charging. However, I was wrong: the problem was in the charger itself (more on that in an upcoming review). All three Twelve South cases work fine with wireless charging.
