AWT News Update: November 22, 2017

A short podcast today, the day before a national holiday in the USA. We talk about where to watch huge balloons careening around the streets of Manhattan online, iPhones made in India, and a Jony Ive talk that you can’t attend:

  • Want to watch a mammoth balloon of Olaf from Frozen online instead of standing in the streets of NYC? We tell you who will probably have the parade available on your Mac, iOS devices or Apple TV
  • A new iPhone SE could be out in the next three to four months, and this one will be manufactured in India
  • Jony Ive will be speaking at Washington, DC’s Hirshorn Museum, but tickets to the talk will be harder to come by than an iPhone X

This is Steve Sande for Apple World Today, and you’re listening to the AWT News Update podcast for Wednesday, November 22nd, 2017. As you’d expect the day before a US holiday, there’s very little news except for a lot of deals on everything… So this will be a short podcast, and we will not be broadcasting tomorrow on Thanksgiving Day. Expect to hear a podcast on Black Friday, though!

Although I’ve never seen the attraction of watching huge balloons floating through the air tethered to a group of people, a lot of people love watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade. Tomorrow is the 91st annual parade, and this one will feature 26 floats in addition to 45 new balloons. Expect to see Olaf from Frozen and Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch flying above the streets of Manhattan this year. The parade starts at 6 AM PT / 9 AM ET Thursday morning and will be available on NBC. But the real action this year is online, including the NBC Live stream on NBC.com and on the NBC apps for iOS and Apple TV. If you have Sling TV, PlayStation Vue, DirecTV Now, YouTube TV or Hulu’s Live TV, you can also watch the parade on those services if you’re a subscriber.

The first iPhones assembled in India may arrive early in 2018. It’s expected that Apple will unveil the iPhone SE 2 (that’s a tentative name, by the way) in the first quarter of 2018. The device will be made for Apple by Taiwanese manufacturer Wistron at its factory in Bengaluru, India. That plant currently makes the SE for consumers in India. The current iPhone SE was introduced on March 21, 2016, so a debut of an updated SE 2 in March of 2018 wouldn’t be entirely unexpected.

And one last story for today. Apple chief designer Jony Ive will be speaking about the “future of design” at the Hirshorn Museum in Washington, DC later this month…but don’t expect to get any of the free tickets. The event will take place from 3 to 4 PM ET on November 29, and all advance tickets are already gone. You can add your name to the online waitlist, but a better idea if you want to bask in the glow of Mr. Ive’s “aluminium” personality, just show up really early for the event and you may get a seat if someone doesn’t show up.

That’s all for today; I’ll be back Friday afternoon with another edition of the AWT News Update.
