Apple’s iPhone X Leather Folio is gorgeous, but overpriced

Along with the iPhone X, Apple released the iPhone X Leather Folio. It’s as gorgeous as you’d expect, but, with a price tag of $99, it’s hard to recommend it over similar leather cases from companies such as Nomad.

Apple says the case — available in “cosmos blue” (my favorite), “taupe,” “berry” and black — is crafted from “specially tanned and finished European leather for a luxurious look and feel.” Think of it as the iPhone X version of the Smart Case for the iPad Pro. Open it, and the smartphone wakes up. Close it and it goes to sleep.

The Leather Folio’s interior sports a soft microfiber lining for added protection. You can keep it on all the time, even when you’re charging wirelessly.

On the left side of the case are two pockets. The top pocket can hold 2-3 credit cards. Below that is a larger pocket for stashing some cash, business cards, or other small items. However, the case is svelte enough that it won’t hold a lot of items.

Please note: don’t put any credit cards in the bottom pocket as the lower-left corner houses a magnet that allows the case to automatically wake the phone when you open it and lock it when you close it. Cool, but magnets can damage the magnetic stripes on credit cards.

Also, the bottom of the Leather Folio leaves the butt of your iPhone X exposed. That doesn’t bother me, but if could result in some damage if you drop the smartphone.

Overall, the iPhone X is an excellent, but overpriced, folio. But if you’ve already spent $1,000 or more on the new smartphone, another 100 bucks may not be a deal breaker.
