The Spanish bank CaixaBank can now use Apple Pay, the bank noted in a blog post. It’s the country’s third-largest lender by market value and with 6,631 branches to serve its 13.2 million customers, CaixaBank has the most extensive branch network in the Spanish market.
Apple’s mobile payment service first came to Spain late last year. Apple Pay in Spain initially supported cards from partner institutions Banco Santander, Carrefour, Ticket Restaurant and American Express. As with past international introductions, Apple Pay partner Mastercard opened up its vast payments network for the Spanish debut.
In related news, electronic payment and money transfer network eftpos has announced contactless payments, or tap to pay, compatibility with Apple Pay through cards issued by Australia and New Zealand banking group (ANZ). Customers now have the option of paying for items with their checking and savings accounts.
Apple Pay is currently available in 15 countries: Australia, Canada, China, France, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Russia, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland, the UK and U.S.
