Review: Tech Armor ActivePower 6000 Mobile Power Bank

External battery packs are quite commonplace, as everybody seems to want a way to keep their devices charged when they’re away from power outlets. But there’s a dilemma with battery packs; they’re usually too large to be pocketable, ugly as sin, and may not have the amperage to quickly top off a tablet. Tech Armor’s ActivePower 6000 Mobile Power Bank (US$39.99) does away with all of the negatives and is an external battery pack worth looking at.

We’ll start with the size, both physical and in terms of power capacity. At 6000 mAh, the ActivePower 6000 has enough power to charge an iPhone 7 Plus (at 2,900 mAh) twice. As for tablets, it’s enough to supply about 3/4 of a charge to a 10.5-inch iPad Pro. Physically, the ActivePower 6000 is 4.1 x 1.87 x 1.06 inches (104mm x 47.4mm x 27mm) and weighs 4.62 ounces (131 grams) without a charging cable. It can easily fit in a pocket.

Looks? This is one of the nicest-looking battery packs I’ve seen in a long time. It has a dark blue shell with black highlights, uses four light blue LEDs to show remaining capacity, and has a built-in white LED flashlight. With a press and hold of the power button, the device shows remaining capacity and turns on the flashlight; just pressing the button displays the capacity and starts charging your connected phone or tablet.

The nice thing about the ActivePower 6000 is that it has a pair of USB ports, one rated at 1.3 amps and the other at 2.1 amps. You can either charge two iPhones at once, or use that 2.1 amp port to supply juice to your iPad.

Tech Armor supplies a two-year warranty, which is somewhat rare in the accessories market, and that covers the included cable as well. All in all, the ActivePower 6000 is a reasonably-priced external battery pack any Apple fan would be proud to have in his or her pocket.
