In a note to clients — as noted by MacRumors — KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says Apple won’t introduce its own wireless charging accessory for the new iPhones that will almost certainly debut today.
The new smartphones are all expected to support inductive wireless charging. Until Apple releases its own wireless charger — and Kuo thinks it will — users will have to purchase third-party accessories. The analyst says Apple’s own solution isn’t yet ready because “higher requirements for wireless charger RF specifications.” He offers no forecast on when such a device might be released.
Inductive charging (also known as “wireless charging”) — which Apple uses with the Apple Watch — uses an electromagnetic field to transfer energy between two objects. This is usually done with a charging station. Energy is sent through an inductive coupling to an electrical device, which can then use that energy to charge batteries or run the device.
