Apple has set up a webpage urging visitors to contribute a fundraiser for victims of last week’s deadly Grenfell Tower fire in London. The number of people dead or presumed dead remains at 79, but the true number could be higher.
Speculation has focused on the role that cladding apparently used in a recent refurbishment of the tower may have played in the fire, which appeared to spread quickly up the exterior of the tower in the early hours of June 14. With the inquiry now in its second week, police have started taking witness statements from those who were in the tower.
The 24-story high-rise was home to 125 families. However, visitors may also have been in the building when the flames took hold.
Here’s a note from Apple’s page: “Following the tragic fire at Grenfell Tower in West London, the record industry came together to record a single for the victims of the disaster. Over 50 artists gave their time and support to make this happen. The song is ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’. This website has been built to create a donation page which, together with the money raised by the record, will hopefully encourage people to donate whatever they can to help those who have been affected by this terrible event. All donations made here will be used by The London Community Foundation to help those in need.”
