Notable apps and app updates for May 12, 2017

On a regular basis, Apple World Today posts a list of notable new apps or app updates that have been released. They may not necessarily be new, but they’re popular and deserve mention. Here are today’s picks.

macOS Apps/Updates

St. Clair Software has released Default Folder X 5.1.5, an update to their utility for the Mac. It enhances the file dialogs in all macOS applications. 

Default Folder provides fast navigation to your files, previews, integrated Spotlight tagging, and more. Its custom keyboard shortcuts put your favorite and recent folders at your fingertips. Version 5.1.5 supports minimized Save dialogs and improves stability.

Default Folder X 5.1.5 is a free update for existing users. It requires macOS 10.10 or higher. New licenses are $34.95; upgrades from version 4 and prior are $14.95.

iMobie has announced PhoneRescue 3.2, a feature update to their iOS data recovery software for Mac and Windows. The upgrade offers optimizations to help iPhone and iPad users recover mistakenly deleted or lost SMS, iMessages, MMS, as well as all attachments and images, directly to Messages app of iDevice, even without a backup.

PhoneRescue 3.2 is available for both macOS and Windows. A personal license is $49.99, and a family license costs $69.99.

Strata has rolled out an update to their flagship software, Design 3D CX. The update includes the addition of Publish VR, which allows designers to export their designs from Strata to virtual reality at the touch of a button, and Render VR which lets users take 360° stereoscopic images and share them on VR viewers like Google Cardboard.

New users can download a free 30-day demo at Strata.com. Existing users can upgrade for $59.95.

Red Giant has unveiled Universe 2.1, an update to its collection of GPU-accelerated plugins for editors and motion graphics artists. The upgrade offers six new tools and updates to two existing plugins.

Red Giant Universe offers more than 65 tools (and counting) that run in Apple Final Cut Pro X, Apple Motion, Adobe Premiere Pro CC, Adobe After Effects, Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve, HitFilm and Magix Vegas Pro. Universe is available as an annual subscription ($99/year) or as a monthly subscription ($20/month). New Red Giant Universe customers can purchase a subscription or download a free trial here.
