Several tech companies — including Twitter, Yelp, Instagram and Foursquare Labs — have agreed to pay a consolidated $5.3 million to resolve a putative class action pending in California federal court accusing them of violating user privacy through their apps that took advantage of an iOS feature that uploaded details from users’ contact lists, reports Law360.
The settlement agreement was filed earlier this week in a San Francisco federal court. Not counting attorney’s fees, the settlement will be provided to qualifying claimants, defined as anyone in the U.S. who downloaded and used the apps between 2009 and 2012. In addition to the companies previously mentioned, Kik, Path, Gowalla and Foodspotting are all involved in the settlement.
