Apple will use its own Authentec algorithm combined with Privaris glass identification technology to redesign a new fingerprint ID solution instead of Synaptics’ Natural ID touch fingerprint sensor or Qualcomm’s Sense ID fingerprint technology for its OLED “iPhone 8,” reports DigiTimes, quoting unnamed “industry sources.”
Apple acquired AuthenTec, a company that makes fingerprint sensors and identify management software, as well as a handful of chip foundries, in 2015. The Apple designed “built-in fingerprint sensor device” will almost replace the current TouchID capacitive touch technology.
Privaris primarily makes tiny fingerprint readers that attach to your key chain. In 2015, the company transferred 26 of its 31 patents to Apple.
Production for the new OLED iPhone is unlikely to start until September due to the redesigned fingerprint ID solution, says DigiTimes. This makes sense to the Sellers Research Firm (that’s me). This squishes hopes that the “iPhone 8” would arrive earlier than new models have in the past.
DigiTimes says Apple is expected to enter volume production for two other new iPhones, which will retain LCD for their displays, in July. However, I don’t expect these models to debut until September or October either.
