Apple-backed Didi to open AI lab in Mountain View, California

The Chinese ride-hailing company Didi Chuxing — in which Apple is an investor — is opening an artificial intelligence lab in Mountain View, California, reports re/code. This is one of the first times it has expanded its physical footprint outside of China.

Didi has poached Charlie Miller, the famed engineer who hacked and stopped a Jeep remotely, away from none other than Uber’s self-driving department to lead Didi’s security and safety development teams, reports re/code. Miller announced he was leaving Uber last week.

Didi Chuxing announced on May 13, 2016, that Apple had invested $1 billion in the company. For the Cupertino, California-based company, the investment in Didi highlights the strategic importance of China and the services segment for Apple’s future strategy, according to Jack Kent, director, Operators & Mobile Media at IHS Technology.
