The CIA faces what could potentially be the biggest ever leak of its secrets, after Wikileaks published thousands of documents claiming to show how the agency uses cyber espionage tactics to hack into smartphones and other devices.
The methods could reportedly capture text and voice messages on iPhones, Android devices and Whatsapp before they were encrypted. They could also hack Microsoft software and Samsung “smart” TVs.
However, Apple has issued a response, saying “many” of the supposed iOS exploits have already been addressed in the most recent version of its mobile operating system. In a statement issued to news outlets, and posted to Twitter by BuzzFeed‘s John Paczkowski, the tech giant says the latest public version of iOS, released in January, contains patches for critical flaws outlined in the WikiLeaks dump.
