Notable apps and app updates for Feb. 9, 2017

On a regular basis, Apple World Today posts a list of notable new apps or app updates that have been released. They may not necessarily be new, but they’re popular and deserve mention. Here are today’s picks.

iOS Apps/Updates

plasq has unveiled Comic Draw for Schools for the iPad. It’s a comic creation app that provides a suite of comic drawing tools, script editing and lettering. Comic Draw for Schools costs $19.99. When schools purchase more than 20 licenses on the Volume Purchase Program for Education store, the price is $9.99.

 

macOS Apps/Updates

St. Clair Software has released an upgrade (2.3) to App Tamer, its Mac utility that manages applications to deliver more efficient CPU usage and increased battery life. This version detects CPU-hogging applications and helps reduce their CPU usage.

App Tamer comes pre-configured to automatically manage Safari, Firefox, Chrome, Spotlight, Time Machine, Word and many other apps when they’re in the background. You can customize it for other apps, as well.

App Tamer will operate on any Mac runningmacOS 10.8 or higher. You can try the utility free for 15 days. Version 2.3 is free to users who purchased App Tamer 2.x or bought App Tamer 1.x after July 1, 2013. For those that purchased a license before that date, the upgrade is $7.95.

Zevrix Solutions has announced LinkOptimizer 5.0.15, a maintenance update to company’s workflow automation solution for Adobe InDesign. The tool allows uers to reduce the size of InDesign links and speeds up processing by eliminating excess image data. 

Link Optimizer also performs image adjustments, converts formats and helps repurpose files for web and mobile devices. Version 5.0.15 addresses an issue in which user defined image quality settings weren’t applied when converting InDesign links to JPEG.

LinkOptimizer can be purchased from the Zevrix website for $259.95 (a “lite” version is available for $179.95). A demo is available for download. The update is free for LinkOptimizer 5.x users and $130 to upgrade from previous versions. LinkOptimizer requires macOS 10.7 and higher and Adobe InDesign/Photoshop CS5-CC 20.
