The Apple Daily Report for Dec. 1, 2016

The AWT News Update is on hiatus while my compadre, Steve, takes a road trip. In its place, I’ll offer a text-only (no podcast) summary of breaking stories with a tip o’ my hat to my former website, Apple Daily Report.

Two weeks after launching an iPhone 6s battery repair program, Apple has released a tool that allows iPhone 6s owners to check whether their device is affected by the problem. An updated page for the iPhone 6s program includes an option to enter a serial number to determine whether an iPhone 6s is eligible for a free battery replacement. prove its mapping service and ensure that it stays up to speed with Google.

An Indiegogo campaign that just got fully-funded has a particularly interesting-looking one which is specifically pitched at Apple’s new MacBook Pros – starting at $149. The Line Dock takes the form of an aluminum base unit designed to sit directly underneath your Mac. Available in 12-, 13- and 15-inch sizes to match the dimensions of Apple’s machines, it offers roughly 15 hours of additional battery-life.

iPhone demand in China and other markets has scaled back substantially since the iPhone 7 launched in September, Taiwanese supply chain sources told DigiTimes. Initial sales were said to have been hot partly due to interest in Jet Black models, and the death of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7, which attracted shoppers looking for an alternative.

iPhone battery problems are much more widespread than Apple admits, Chinese authorities say. Purportedly, a mysterious problem causing iPhones to unexpectedly shut down is much larger than Apple has admitted to, Chinese authorities say, and affects iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, and iPhone 6s Plus devices—not just the iPhone 6s.

Apple has acquired a Finnish company called Indoor.io to help it map indoor spaces, Bloomberg reports. The Cupertino-headquartered company reportedly made the acquisition to improve its mapping service and ensure that it stays up to speed with Google.
