A good hunk of the U.K. mass transit system, including National Rail, has been added to Apple Maps — beyond the London area already covered, reports AppleInsider.
The U.K. additions to metropolitan areas include Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Leeds-Bradford, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, and Sheffield. Other smaller localities in between the major locations have been added, as well.
Apple Maps now supports the National Rail network in many areas of the United Kingdom, including the CrossCountry, TransPennine Express, Great Western Railway, Grand Central, Northern Rail, East Midlands Trains, Virgin Trains, Virgin Trains East Coast, Arriva Trains Wales, Hull Trains, and other train services.
In the U.S., Salt Lake City’s transit information has been added. The addition of the area brings the total of U.S metropolitan areas mass transit systems supported by the app to 28.
Added in iOS 9, transit directions rolls out to cities as data becomes available. When used, it’s possible to see routes, departure and arrival times, and station locations close to venues.
Apple’s transit directions in Apple Maps are powered by Embark and HopStop, two companies acquired by Apple over the past few years. Data sources associated with each location feed the directions in real-time, providing updates to schedules as they happen.
