Hi, this is Steve Sande for Apple World Today, and this is the AWT News Update for November 11, 2016.
Our sponsor this week has been 4K Video Downloader for Mac. Grab video from YouTube, Vimeo and other sources automatically for offline viewing at your leisure. For a limited time, 4K Video Downloader for Mac is available at half-off, just $9.95. Check out the link in the show notes for details.
We know our listeners, and we know that you’re probably not the folks who spend a lot of time or money on craft sales platform Etsy. However, if you are or know somebody who just can’t stay away from buying handcrafted goods from Etsy, you’ll be happy to know that they’ve launched support for web-based Apple Pay transactions. Now the Etsy app has had Apple Pay support for some time now, but web compatibility is much more significant because the Etsy catalog is much easier to browse from a desktop or laptop. At this point, using Apple Pay on the web requires a Mac with an iPhone or Apple Watch nearby for authentication. As soon as the MacBook Pro models with the Touch Bar and Touch ID begin to ship in large numbers, those users will be able to authenticate with a tap on the Touch ID sensor. Over 1,000 websites currently support Apple Pay, one of them being Apple World Today. You can use Apple Pay to pay for memberships in Team AWT from either Macs running macOS Sierra or iPhones or iPads running iOS 10.
Rumors coming from the Apple supply chain say that the 9.7- and 12.9-inch iPad Pros will be refreshed in March of 2017, along with the release of a new 10.9-inch iPad with no bezel — in other words, the display will stretch all the way across the front of the device. This will allegedly allow Apple to ship a larger screen device in a form factor virtually the same size as the 9.7-inch iPad Pro. Other rumors say that the 12.9-inch iPad Pro will get the full True Tone display that is currently featured on the 9.7inch model.
Are you still waiting for AirPods? The Apple wireless earphones have been delayed a while, but investment bank Barclays says that AirPods may enter production in December. While this means that you might possibly be able to get a pair of the highly-coveted AirPods prior to the holiday gift-giving season, a launch in January 2017 is much more likely. It’s expected that the initial production run will only be around 10 million to 15 million AirPods, which could result in very quick sellouts and extended shipping estimates for online orders.
Finally, as Veterans Day is being commemorated today in the United States, we pause to thank those who made sacrifices to serve our country in the armed forces. Apple CEO Tim Cook tweeted a photo earlier today showing ex-military personnel who are now employed by the company at Apple headquarters in Cupertino. Cook’s tweet said “Proud to work alongside these and many more veterans at Apple. We honor all the brave men and women who sacrificed for our freedom. #VeteransDay”
That’s all for today; We’ll be back Monday afternoon with another edition of the AWT News Update.
