Apple has sought incentives from the Indian government before setting up a manufacturing unit in the country, according to the Economic Times. The incentives are purportedly related to the Department of Revenue and Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeITY).
“They are doing their due diligence from quite some time. The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) will write to both the departments regarding this communication for their views,” an official told The Economic Times. At present, to boost electronic manufacturing in the country, the government provides benefits under the Modified Special Incentive Package Scheme (MSIPS).
Getting a foothold in India has been a challenge for Apple. The company has opened its retail stores in a number of countries around the world, but not in India. The country has restrictive real estate investment laws for foreign companies.
What’s more, India’s Finance and Commerce Ministries rejected Apple’s request to sell used iPhones in the country.
“We are not in favour of any company selling used phones in the company, however certified they may be,” commerce and industry minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said.
The report did not outline when Apple might add the sixth color to the lineup. It also says the info obtained from supply chain sources “may be unreliable.”
