Rumor (and my take on it): Apple will ship four sizes of the iPad Pro in the spring

Apple will ship four iPad Pro models next spring, including 7.9-inch, 9.7-inch, and 10.1-inch, and 12.9-inch models, according to Japanese blog Mac Otakara — as noted by MacRumors. I think the report/rumor is only partially correct.

The 12.9-inch model will reportedly feature the True Tone display introduced with its 9.7-inch counterpart, using advanced four-channel ambient light sensors to automatically adapt the color and intensity of the display to match the light in the surrounding environment. The super-sized iPad will also gain the 9.7-inch model’s same 12-megapixel rear-facing iSight camera and True Tone flash, according to Mac Otakara.

The smaller 7.9-inch model, which will succeed the iPad mini 4, will reportedly include a Smart Connector, True Tone display, four speakers, and a 12-megapixel rear-facing iSight camera with True Tone flash. All three new iPad Pro models will gain quad microphones, compared to the current dual setup, and retain 3.5mm headphone jacks, according to Mac Otakara.

Chances that this rumors is true, IMHO (80%). I think we’ll definitely see refreshed iPad Pros in early spring with the biggest model sporting a True Tone display. It kinda makes sense to introduce a 7.9-inch version to replace the iPad mini. Of course, then why not simply call all the models smaller than 12.9 inches “iPads” and the biggest size the “iPad Pro.”

I’m also dubious that we’ll see a 10.1-inch model. I can’t see the justification of adding such a size since it will only be incrementally bigger than its 9.7-inch sibling. Also, the Sellers Research Firm (that’s me) is willing to bet that all the iPad models will ditch the 3.5mm audio jack as the iPhone 7/7 Plus did.
