Apple, you might want to give us some Mac upgrades ASAP. Mac sales are continuing to slide, according to data from two research groups.
According to both Gartner and IDC, during the third quarter (3Q) of 2016, Apple shipped five million Macs. That’s down from 5.4 million in the year-ago quarter, according to Gartner — and down from 5.8, according to IDC. That’s a 13.4% decline. And Apple can’t blame it on sales lost to the iPad, since tablet sales aren’t picking up the slack. The problem, everyone agrees, is a stale Mac line-up.
According to Gartner, Apple shipped two million Macs in the U.S. in Q3 2016, a 10.7% decline from 2.3 million in 3Q 2015. This places the company fourth among this country’s PC (as in “personal computer,” not necessarily Windows machines) manufacturers with 12.9% market down (down from 14.3% in 3Q 2015). Ahead of Apple are HP (29.7% market share, up 3.1%), Dell (23.5% market share, up 1.6%), and Lenovo (14.1%, up 15.3%).
Globally, Apple’s personal computer market share in the third quarter 2016 is 6.7%, according to Gartner. That’s down from 7.3% in the year-ago period. Apple is number five among worldwide computer makers, trailing Lenovo (20.9%, down 2.4%), HP (20.4%, up 2.3%), Dell (14.7%, up 2.6%), and Asus (7.8%, up 2.4%).
