It’s time for a Mac laptop with LTE support. Having 4G LTE in a laptop is nothing new and there’s no obvious reason why at least some models of the MacBook Pro, MacBook, or MacBook Air (if it lives on past this month) shouldn’t offer this capability.
After all, the iPad line already has such options. And LTE is booming. ABI Research says that, by 2018, “LTE deployments should deliver population coverage of 57% (4.2 billion) and 31% (2.3 billion) in legacy WCDMA and CDMA2000 markets respectively.”
Of course, there is concern about attaching a laptop to today’s high cost cellular bandwidth. So perhaps Apple should start building towers and putting together their own your digital wireless network. It would be a similar but different effort from Google’s.
Perhaps it could be dubbed “iCloud Unlimited.” In essence Apple would begin building out digital towers and infrastructure, starting with the major metropolitan areas first and expanding later to the more rural areas. Or perhaps the company could find partners in original local carriers.
The goal wouldn’t be for Apple to build out their own cell phone competitor — and they still wouldn’t be able to compete internationally. However, with Apple technologies such as FaceTime, having a strong national network certainly would not hurt them.
