Korean site ETNews is reporting that a small Korean battery company with around 20 “expert technologists in batteries” has been tapped by Apple for technology to be used in a self-driving vehicle.
The article says Apple recently signed off on a non-disclosure agreement with a South Korean battery developer to co-develop batteries for “Protect Titan” and are carrying out work in South Korea and the U.S. ETNews doesn’t name the company, but says that it makes cylindrical lithium-ion secondary batteries about as thick as two fingers and which are different from other batteries as their centers are hollow.
“Project Titan” is reportedly the code name for Apple’s vehicle project. Last month it was announced that Bob Mansfield, Apple’s former senior vice president of Technologies, had been lured out of retirement to head the project. Of course, whether the project involves a complete Apple-branded vehicle or some sort of software/hardware product for other companies remains to be seen.
