The overall PC (personal computer) market has been declining for seven consecutive quarters, but the Mac has avoided the trend. No more. Both the IDC and Gartner research groups have issued new reports that show Apple’s computers have lost market share in the second quarter of 2016. (Of course, it might help if there were some substantial upgrades to the Mac line-up.)
According to Gartner, HP returned to positive growth in the second quarter of 2016 (2Q16) after four consecutive quarters of shipment decline. Dell grew faster than the industry average in all regions in second quarter of 2016. Asus, Apple and Acer are battling it out for the fourth position in worldwide PC shipments for 2Q16.
Gartner says Apple had 7.1% of worldwide market share in 2Q16. That was the same as the same period a year-ago, but Mac sales dipped 4.9% year-over-year.
In the U.S., Apple dropped from 13.8% market share to 12.3% in 2Q16 as Mac sales dipped from 2.1 million to 1.9 million year-over-year. Apple is number four among personal computer manufacturers in the U.S., following Dell (27% market share), HP (26.3%), and Lenovo (14.5%).
According to IDC, HP and Dell continued to vie for leadership of the U.S. market, with HP Inc. recovering the title in 2Q16. Lenovo and Acer also saw strong growth, actually outpacing the market leaders but with much smaller share.
IDC says that Apple has 7.1% of worldwide market share as of 2Q16, compared to 7.4% in 2Q15. Mac sales dropped from 4.8 million to 4.4 million year-over-year, slipping Apple to fourth place among global personal computer vendors.
In the U.S., per IDC, Apple is in fourth place with 11.2% market share, compared to HP (27.9%), Dell (25.8%), and Lenovo (14%). Mac sales dropped 7.6% year-over-year from 2.1 million to 1.9 million, according to IDC.
