Apple wants to encourage millions of iPhone owners to register as organ donors through a software update that will add an easy sign-up button to the health information app that comes installed on every iPhone, reports CNBC.
CEO Tim Cook told The Associated Press that the lack of organ donors hit home when Apple co-founder Steve Jobs endured an “excruciating” wait for a liver transplant in 2009. Apple is adding the option to enroll in a national donor registry by clicking a button within the iPhone’s Health app when iOS 10 is released this fall.
The Health app, introduced with iOS 9, gives you an easy-to-read dashboard of your health and fitness data, including heart rate, calories burned, blood sugar, cholesterol and more. You can also create an emergency card with important health information — for example, your blood type or allergies — that’s available right from your Lock screen.
