It’s a tough world out there right now in the Apple news business. We’re painfully aware of that fact here at Apple World Today, and yesterday brought news of a longtime Apple news site – MacNN – getting ready to shut down for good.
According to MacNN editor Charles Martin, the site has been operating for 21 years but will be closing up shop on July 1, 2016. Said Martin, “We’ve joked before that Apple becoming a huge mainstream company is the worst thing that ever happened to us, but it’s true: there’s less need for an Apple-specific news site when news about Apple is plastered everywhere, on every site, all the time.”
Apple World Today rose from the ashes of TUAW, Apple Daily Report and Macsimum News, all sites that were thriving at one point in time but faltered as Apple’s fortunes rose and mainstream news sites started adding their own Apple sections. That’s made it tough for us to survive, and our future is still uncertain.
It is incredibly sad to see a respected Apple news site like MacNN shutting down, particularly when it has been a mainstay of Apple news reporting for over two decades. We wish Charles, Managing Editor Mike Wuerthele and the rest of the MacNN staff the best, and they have our hopes for success in whatever they choose to do in the future.
