The “post-PC era” may not be here just yet (assuming it comes at all). For example: after hearing students and teachers “overwhelmingly” say iPads are used to play games in class, while laptops are better for schoolwork, Auburn and other districts in Maine are offering to replace the Apple tablets with laptops such as MacBooks, reports the Lewiston-Auburn Sun Journal.
The department and Apple are calling it a “refresh” and are making the swap at no extra charge. Laptops and iPads ordered in 2013 can be returned for new MacBook Airs, which cost less than the Apple laptops three years ago according to the Journal. The article adds that schools who do prefer iPads can also opt to get the latest versions of the tablets.
Before Auburn decided what to do, the district surveyed grades seven through 12 students and teachers, Auburn School Department Technology Director Peter Robinson told the Auburn School Committee on Wednesday night. According to the Journal, the results were overwhelmingly in favor of laptops: 88.5% of teachers and 74% of students favored them over iPads.
